Paper Description
This 15-point elective paper enables you to design and carry out a directed study of a negotiated topic in tertiary teaching and learning, with the support of a faculty mentor from the Centre for Tertiary Teaching and Learning (CeTTL). You may use this paper to explore in greater detail a topic introduced in other papers in the Postgraduate Certificate of Tertiary Teaching and Learning, or to explore a topic that is relevant to the programme learning outcomes, but not covered by any existing papers in the PGCert Tertiary Teaching & Learning. Within the broad parameters set out in the paper outline, you will negotiate learning outcomes, assessment and content in collaboration with your CeTTL mentor.
Note that, if you would like to design and carry out a more substantial research project as part of your PGCert Tertiary Teaching & Learning, you can combine this paper in consecutive terms with TERTL513: Researching Tertiary Learning & Teaching Practice.
Paper Structure
The paper requires 150 hours of study, mostly in the form of independent, self-directed study. You will work under the guidance of a mentor from the CeTTL staff. You must negotiate with your mentor to determine the exact schedule of any real-time meetings, which may take place face-to-face or online. You will also negotiate the details of your study plan with your mentor, including the exact timing of milestones and the outputs from assessments. The paper lecturer will have oversight over whether the study plan sufficiently addresses the programme learning outcomes.
A directed study project can take a variety of forms - for example, you might produce:
- an annotated bibliography,
- a literature review,
- a research proposal,
- an evidence-base for developing materials for use in the classroom,
- an evaluation report,
- a meta-analysis of the research literature relating to specific teaching strategies,
- one or more videos that explore specific topics,
- an online portfolio of resources for a specific topic,
- a draft of a substantial conference presentation or journal article on a tertiary teaching and learning topic, or
- any other output and format appropriate to your goals.
Learning Outcomes
